A medical mattress is not a medical device, and there is no official standard for the name. Two mattresses both called "medical" can feel and last very differently, so compare thickness, foam type and firmness rather than the label.

What makes a medical mattress cost more?

• Thickness. A 20 to 25 cm mattress uses more foam than a 12 cm one and gives a heavier adult more depth of support. This is the biggest single driver of price.
• Foam type. Rebonded foam, made from pressed foam pieces, is the cheapest and firmest. High-density foam, memory foam and latex layers cost more and feel more comfortable on top.
• Comfort top. A pillow top or eurotop adds a soft layer over the firm core, so it feels less hard while keeping support.

• Made to order. Custom sizes cost a little more, but a store that makes mattresses to order can produce them without a large premium.

Firmer is not always better

Many people in the UAE choose the hardest medical mattress they can find for back pain. Research suggests that is not the best choice for most people. A well-known Spanish trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, published in The Lancet in 2003, found that people given medium-firm mattresses had less pain in bed and less disability after 90 days than people given firm ones. A 2021 review of 39 studies reached the same conclusion: medium-firm mattresses gave the best comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment.

For your budget, this means you don't need to pay extra for "extra firm". A firm mattress with a softer comfort layer, or a balanced mattress, may suit you better. If you have a diagnosed back condition, ask your doctor or physiotherapist what they recommend.
