Why velvet looks different

On flat fabric, a print sits on a single smooth plane and reads the same from every angle. On velvet, the print sits on thousands of tiny upright fibres. Light catches the tops of those fibres and falls into the gaps between them, so colours look deeper and the pattern shifts slightly in tone as you walk past the bed. It is the same reason velvet furniture looks richer than the same colour in cotton.

When to use it

Velvet bedding suits bedrooms that run cool, which in the UAE means almost any room with the air conditioning on. It comes into its own from November through March, when nights genuinely cool down. Care

Wash on a gentle cycle in cold water, turned inside out to protect the printed surface. Skip fabric softener, which coats the pile and flattens it over time, and avoid bleach. Dry on low heat or air dry in the shade, then shake the comforter out when you make the bed to lift the filling and bring the pile back up. Always check the care label on the product first.
